Essential Ingredients and Tools

To set up a perfect Korean BBQ at home, you’ll need a few key ingredients and tools. Here’s a simple list to get started:

  • Grill: Electric grill, stovetop griddle, or outdoor BBQ
  • Meat: Samgyeopsal (pork belly), Bulgogi (marinated beef), Chadolbaegi (thin beef brisket)
  • Sauces: Gochujang, Ssamjang, Sesame oil + Salt Sauce (기름장)
  • Side Dishes: Kimchi, pickled radish, fresh vegetables
  • Wrap Ingredients: Lettuce, perilla leaves, sliced garlic, green chili peppers
  • Tools: Tongs, kitchen scissors, grill pan, dipping bowls

Korean BBQ Dipping Sauces

1. Gochujang (고추장)

Gochujang is a spicy, fermented red chili paste made from gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), rice, fermented soybeans, and salt. It adds a sweet, savory, and spicy kick, making it an essential dipping sauce for Korean BBQ.

2. Ssamjang (쌈장)

Ssamjang is a thick, savory dipping sauce made from a blend of gochujang, doenjang (soybean paste), sesame oil, garlic, and sometimes sugar. It’s perfect for wrapping grilled meat in lettuce or perilla leaves.

3. Sesame Oil + Salt Sauce (기름장)

This simple yet essential sauce is made from sesame oil, salt, and a pinch of black pepper. Known as 기름장 in Korean, it pairs especially well with grilled pork belly (samgyeopsal). The nutty, savory flavor enhances the meat's richness without overpowering it.
